Elizabeth Jane Smith

d. June 8, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Wife, and Friend to many – Elizabeth Smith.  She passed peacefully while under the wonderful care of the staff at the Oromocto Hospital, and previously of Paradise Villa and Farraline Home. There are so many to thank, including all of the friends who connected with Elizabeth during her time in Fredericton after the passing of her husband of 58 years, Beverley G. Smith.

Elizabeth was born in Saint John, New Brunswick to Harold and Zella Springer and attended primary and secondary school in Saint John.  The family eventually moved to their summer cottage at Ingleside in Westfield, New Brunswick. After graduation Elizabeth went to MacDonald College and was then accepted into the School of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University, where she graduated as the only woman in the class of 1957. The Dalhousie yearbook noted that Elizabeth was a lady who could show what a “woman could really do;” she graduated as President and valedictorian of her class. Elizabeth then moved to Calgary, Alberta, and it was there she met Bev.  Although they grew up on the same street in Saint John New Brunswick, they did not know each other until their grandmothers colluded and sent them each a letter in Calgary suggesting that they should meet, and they were married in Saint John in 1959.  The couple moved to London, Ontario in 1960 where all three sons were born.  In 1972 the family returned to New Brunswick and resided in Fredericton and Prince William.   The couple then moved to Fanny Bay BC in 2007 and spent several wonderful years there until Bev passed in 2017.  It was at that time Elizabeth returned to Fredericton.

Elizabeth loved to golf and represented New Brunswick in team competition at the 1958 Canadian Amateur championship. In addition to her work as a pharmacist Elizabeth loved to garden and volunteer. Most of all Elizabeth provided a sense of welcome and caring when family and friends came to visit.

Elizabeth is survived by her three sons, Cameron (Sylvia), James (Anne), and Bruce (Solange), by her brother Bill Springer (Anne) and brother in law Doug Wright, and by their grandchildren Hallie, Ruddock, Samuel, Gillianne, Matthew and Meaghan. She is predeceased by her loving sister Susan Wright nee Springer (2006).

Arrangements are in the hands of Modern Celebrations & Cremations.  A funeral is planned for the late summer.

In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of choice will be greatly appreciated.
