It is with deep sadness that the family announce the passing of Bombardier Michael James Whittaker, of Fredericton, NB, which occurred on Thursday, June 2nd, 2022, at the age of 50. Born on January 20th, 1972, in Saint John, NB, he was the son of James and the late Diane (MacKay) Whittaker.
As a young boy, Mike was filled with energy and curiosity. He did well in school and participated in a variety of activities, including Beavers, Scouts, volleyball, fishing, golfing, hunting and hockey. His sisters recall having frozen hands and feet as they were being taken around Atlantic Canada for hockey tournaments. He also loved being outside surrounded by nature.
Mike had quite a sense of humour from pulling pranks on his sisters to flinging spaghetti on the kitchen ceiling. He enjoyed the laughter resulting from his stunts. He had a huge heart! He felt the need to protect those around him. His younger sister recalls him intimidating any boys who may show an interest in her. Stories from friends report that he also protected them.
After graduating from St. Malachy’s Memorial High in 1990, Mike studied at Modern Business College before moving to Ontario where he lived for several years. In September 1997, Mike joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), where he became a member of 1 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (1 RCHA), completing many army and artillery courses. He was so proud to be a soldier, taking his protective nature to the next level. He really wanted to help people.
His first tour of duty was in Bosnia in 2000, where he spent 8 months. When he came home, family and friends recall the stories of how he helped others build homes, schools, and wells. He participated in providing food and other necessities to the people there. Mike’s big heart was full, and he felt satisfied that he made the right decision by choosing this career.
Mike’s second tour of duty in 2006 was quite different. He spent 8 months in Afghanistan, battling not only in the field but also the elements (blowing sand, extreme heat). Sadly, after this tour, life would never be the same for him. He retired from the military in 2007. He returned home to his loving, grateful family and friends. Since that time, Mike developed and endured several chronic illnesses, ultimately leading to his early death.
Mike will be missed by his father, Jim Whittaker; sisters Angela Keefe (Ron), Shelley Whelton (Michael); cherished nephew, Nick MacDougall; and bonus nieces Lauryn and Maddy. Mike is also survived by many extended family and friends that came into his life for a reason, season, or lifetime.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, and his mother Diane.
We have enjoyed reading notes, emails, and receiving phone calls to express condolences and share stories about Mike. Thank you.
As per Mike’s request, there will be no formal service or visitation. Immediate family will reconvene this summer to carry out additional wishes. Donations can be made to Wounded Warriors Canada or Diabetes Canada.
